The School of Design at The Glasgow School of Art and the Institute of Design Innovation invite applications to the suite of Design Innovation postgraduate degree programmes. Doctoral study is also available.
The GSA now teach Masters level study in Design Innovation at two campuses, the campus in Glasgow city centre and our new Creative Campus near Forres in the Scottish Highlands. Masters in Research (M.Res) and PhD study can also be pursued. Please contact Dr Lynn McHattie for details.

These degrees are rooted in the user-centred approach to design, and focus upon improving human experience as it is understood through the design process – whether for people and places, communities and organisations, or by re-imagining the possibilities offered by technology. The degrees combine group and collaborative working with individual research projects. In recent years students have worked with Fujitsu (Tokyo), Toshiba, Tesco bank, Barclays, Alzheimer’s Scotland, the inhabitants of Eigg and Colonsay, Barlinnie Prison and the Scottish Government.
Currently, we are undertaking a major research project called Archipelago 136 in the Hebrides, the island chain on the west coast of the Scottish mainland. This involves working with communities, local government, cultural and economic organisations, artists, fishermen and craft producers to consider the opportunities for Design Innovation to work with Islanders to imagine new and desirable futures for life in The Hebrides.
The Design Innovation programmes recruit a geographically, professionally and educationally diverse cohort who work within a studio environment utilising project-based learning to address real world issues, such as prisoner rehabilitation, care for the terminally ill in hospice environments, ecologically-sustainable tourism, quality of life in rural areas, and the impact of mobile digital technologies upon contemporary society. The curriculum is based around “live” projects with clients and engages with the problems and issues confronting contemporary culture.
Scholarships
Prestigious Scottish Funding Council Awards are available to high calibre applicants for this programme. The SFC has selected this programme in recognition of the high demand for students with these qualifications.

In addition, we have a limited number of Design Innovation scholarships, which offer a tuition waiver. And for non-European students wishing to study at our Highland campus there a number of Creative Pioneer awards worth £5000.
Graduates from these programmes have gone on to work as service designers, consultants, design academics, researchers, to found their own companies and to study for PhDs.
